Hola Buena Gente.
I went into isolation two weeks ago because of COVID and it was fall. Came out this past Monday and it was winter. No leaves on the trees. It’s dark at 4:45pm already in Manhattan.
Pero the good news is we’re just 114 days from spring now.
If you’re not a fan, un caribeño in need of some summer sun, here are some helpful hints to help you fight the winter blues .
Anyywaaaaaaaayyysssss….
¿El Hieghtseño?
ORIGIN STORY: “El Hieghtseño,” the name of the dispatch is kind of my nod to The New Yorker. Wanted to think of a term for someone from the heights and I thought of a heightseño, like saying “puertoriqueño.” BUT, originally, I thought of “El Heightsano,” like “paisano” or “cubano/dominicano/mejicano” etc. Though I immediately noticed a little bit of an issue, I proceeded to ignore it and mockup some logo designs thinking it would be just me and my childish, un-sano brain that noticed the issue.
Once I showed the designs to Natalie there was a-no way she missed the cheeky nature of the name and helped me to avoid flushing the success of my newsletter on arrival.
Also, my little pigeon logo is a nod to the New Yorker “mascot” Eustace Tilley.
eso eso.
FRYTARDE
Isn’t it crazy how much you’ve been thinking about buying stuff this week? I know I have; it’s like I’m literally trying to manifest a necessity for something when in reality I’m in need of absolutely nothing. Except for an electric toothbrush because mine just died.
If you’re in need of appeasing the successfully indoctrinated desire of consuming on this fine Frytarde (black friday), but would rather not give your hard earned money to Mr. Bezos, we’re running a little sale in the shop from Friday to Saturday:
20%+ off prints (excluding custom)
There’s a bunch of new unique clay earrings on the site that Natalie created and some of them are at a sale price for the next two days, too.
We’ve Never discounted our work like this before and not sure if we will again. Maybe everyone will be satisfied after this frytarde and we’ll just collectively cancel any future observances? Vamo a ver.
SHOP THE SALE! CHECK DA YUMAYEWELS!
Also, the shop will be closing on Dec 10th-Dec 26ish so if for some reason you’ll be needing some gifts for some upcoming event in the next couple of weeks and you’re thinking of snagging some YUMAYORK, don’t delay on your orders!
Especially if you’re thinking of a CUSTOM HOME gift because that has like a 2-3 week turnaround. ¡So dále mi gente!
Sketchy Sketches
Normally my sketchbook is just a mess of half done sketches, but these two pages I’m pretty happy with the results and thought I’d share. Quick and sketchy. You gotta purge out all the bad and eventually you start seeing results you’re happy with.
And what you jammin’ too?
The season change really does affect my music choice. Bleak, cold, sad weather= bleak kinda sad music. ¿Como que?
The Tallest Man on Earth , Phoebe Bridgers , Bright Eyes, Juan Luis Guerra (← seriously bleak premise in that song, no’e verda?)
But the effect is positive! Like two negatives make a positive? Two lefts make a right? There’s logic there, I’m sure of it.
Thanks for reading the dispatch. Share with someone who you might think might want to read with the button below.
HASTA LA PROXIMA!
***One last thing!***
We’re still on the CHOOSE app, so if you haven’t checked that out, download it and get $30 OFF your first purchase with code BONJOUR off ANYTHING on the app. We don’t make any money from the downloads of the app. Just thought $30 for free is pretty great.
ok bye 😘
Happy to hear your out of isolation and feeling better. I like the "El Hieghtseño,” reference although I don't see the issue your having with it? Should look good on a t-shirt. Winter in the Heights has always been challenging. My Mom was always scared of falling on the icy sidewalks when the wind blew. ( A Dios Mio!) Me and my compadres made out by unburying parked cars for fifty cents each. (Us not the cars) And delivering flowers during Christmas was a tip maker sometimes ten bucks! That was back in the late '60s. March brought the worst of the snow. Sometimes no school, which we didn't mind and the city snow plows, garbage trucks with snow blades would make these huge snow piles that turned black over time and would stick around for a month. But May came and street life was warming.
